Side Effects of Colchicine – Colchicine

Colchicine is the highly poisonous natural product and derived metabolite. It is extracted from the plants belonging to the species called Colchicum or Autumn Crocus. Initially the drug was used for treating rheumatic disorders particularly the gout condition. Though, the current medicinal use of the drug is for treating gout, possibilities of its use for treating cancer are well under studies. The drug is used for helping relieve the acute pains of gout attacks and avert its recurrences as well.

Like all other medicines, Colchicine may also cause certain side effects ranging from mild to severe. Some of such reported side effects include: blood accompanying urine, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, sore throat, weakness in muscles, nausea, vomiting, numbness or itching in hands or feet, pain or difficulty while passing urine, pain, swelling, redness or irritation at the injection site on the body, skin rash or itching, stomach pain, swelling of the face or mouth, unusual bruising or bleeding and unusual weakness or exhaustion. In any such symptoms or experiences, the patient should immediately refer to his doctor for necessary medical assistance.

However, the patient may experience some other side effects for which he may not require consulting the doctor or discontinue the medication as they go away in due course of time, may include: diarrhoea, loss of appetite and hair loss. Some more but rare signs of side effects that are unexpected or uncommon may in some remote cases be reported by the patients for which he is advised to consult his doctor on priority for necessary medical advice and actions.
